Edouard Burgeat is a French artist born in Paris in 1988.

He lives and works between Paris and his studio in Burcy, on the edge of the Fontainebleau forest.

He studied fine art and photography at the Ateliers de Sèvres before graduating in spatial and product design from Central Saint Martins, London, in 2012.

“I work with what already exists, seeking new forms of persistence.”

Burgeat’s work begins with forms whose existence is already underway. Technical objects, living organisms, archives, images and materials carry traces of former uses, contexts and temporalities that precede the artwork. His artistic gesture shifts the conditions through which their meaning continues to operate.

Each work inhabits the interval in which something has ceased to be what it once was, Forms of Persistence, yet has not fully become something else.

This threshold is the material of the work. Objects do not disappear when they lose their function; they migrate between states. An image becomes a surface. Technology becomes phenomenon. An archive becomes territory. The living becomes sculpture. The previous state remains active, allowing multiple temporalities to coexist without resolution.

Materials act within these transformations. They resist, persist and continue to affect their surroundings. Through photographic transfer, erosion, encapsulation and biological processes, Burgeat intervenes within changes already unfolding. Personal and collective histories remain embedded in the resulting forms, connecting questions of memory and transmission with those of borders, confinement and freedom.

Painting, sculpture, photography and installation become different manifestations of the same inquiry: how things continue their existence once their original function has faded, while their capacity to produce meaning remains. The artwork becomes one of the forms this transformation takes.
